CBD and Your Dog: Everything You Need To Know

Your dog was so happy when you started staying at home with him a couple of months ago, but now that you’ve been hanging out with him more, have you noticed things you missed?  Have you noticed your dog slowing down? Is your friend anxious? CBD is here to help. If you are thinking about adding CBD into your dog’s routine, this article will help you understand some of the ways you can do so that are safe and effective.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD oil, a derivative of the cannabis plant, is a liquified extract that comes from the plant’s trichomes. Called Cannabidiol, CBD is a compound that’s believed to have many medical benefits without any psychoactive effects seen in products containing THC. Since it does not contain THC, which produces mind-altering feelings, you don’t have to worry about your dog feeling “high” or experiencing any worrisome changes in personality.

What do Vets Think About It?

According to an article on FluentWoof by veterinarian Dr. Edele Grey, “a study published just this year surveyed 2,130 veterinarians and found that 61.5% of respondents felt they could discuss the use of CBD with other veterinary colleagues, yet only 45.5% felt comfortable discussing its use with clients. Clients most commonly ask about using CBD products for pain relief, anxiety and seizures in their pets, yet there is little empirical research on their use in veterinary patients and there are currently no FDA approved products available.”

Just like with humans deciding to take CBD oil, we recommend having a conversation with your vet before starting your dog on CBD.

How Can CBD Benefit Your Dog?

Pet owners are increasingly turning to CBD to help their animals suffering from anxiety, seizures, arthritis, and pain. In the Los Angeles Times article, “Why some pet owners are turning to CBD to treat their ailing animals,” Beverly Hills resident Janelle Hamilton discusses how CBD helped her chihuahua, Apple. Apple displayed anxious behaviors like pacing by the door,  bouts of incessant barking, and compulsive fur-licking. Hamilton claims that Apple is a “totally different dog now” and “seems happier” with the help of CBD.

As dogs age, helping them remain youthful and feeling great is our most immense responsibility. Many people have turned to CBD to help their animals as they age. According to GreyMuzzle.org, there are a wide variety of conditions that may see a benefit from CBD:

  • Discomfort and lack of mobility
  • Lack of appetite
  • Cognitive dysfunction
  • Anxiety

These are just a small handful of conditions that may see benefit from using CBD. According to FluentWoof, there is limited research into how exactly CBD can help pets, but that doesn’t mean CBD can’t help your dog. “there are numerous benefits that may possibly be extrapolated from human research. CBD is not yet approved by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) due to the lack of supporting, scientific studies but anecdotally CBD has had some strong positive results. Colorado State University are leading a number of studies into the potential uses of CBD for dogs.”
