Reading CBD Labels: Everything You Need to Know

If you’re a budding CBD customer, you’ve likely seen an eye-catching label or two making a bunch of cool statements (help with focus and sleep!) and generally looking super enticing. Once you get past the awesome packaging, though, another beast to your buyer’s journey appears: the label. Between all the numbers, percentages, and weird terms, there can certainly be a whole lot to keep track of when trying to choose the best CBD oil for you.

So, to make it all a bit more digestible, we’re compiling a list of important-to-understand terms when reading CBD labels. With these under your belt, you can focus on what matters most: choosing a CBD oil that works best for you with confidence. Let’s dive in!

All About the Plant

These terms are all used in reference to the general CBD oil or the plant itself – you can think of these as CBD Oil identifiers.

●       THC

This is the cannabinoid responsible for producing the psychoactive effects in cannabis products: if you see that your product’s THC content is higher than .3%, it’s likely either not a trustworthy product, or it’s a product that’s supposed to have THC!

●       Full-spectrum vs. Broad-spectrum vs. CBD Isolate

These terms tell you about what other compounds are present in the CBD oil that you’re looking at. As Healthline further explains:  “full-spectrum CBD contains all of the naturally available compounds of the cannabis plant, including THC. Broad-spectrum CBD has all of the naturally occurring compounds, except THC.”

The purest form of CBD is called CBD isolate, which is the CBD cannabinoid isolated from the rest of the compounds. This form of CBD is completely THC-free but also lacks the other beneficial cannabinoids.

For your reference, Tree of Life Seeds CBD oils are all broad-spectrum because we believe it’s crucial to preserve as many naturally occurring non-psychoactive compounds in CBD as possible.

●       Extraction methods

The way CBD is extracted from the plant can make or break product quality. Extraction methods include CO2 extraction and Natural Solvent extraction – there are many ways to do this. Tree of Life Seeds uses a unique extraction method to create a broad-spectrum oil that’s THC-free.

●       Terpenes

Much like essential oils, terpenes are what give cannabis its unique –and different – flavors and scents. These are also known to promote relaxation and some anxiety relief. So, when a label mentions a “terpene profile,” it’s simply listing the types of flavor.

All About the Product

Now that you have an overview of generalized CBD label know-how, this next section will walk you through some label insights that pertain to specific batches or products.

●       Serving Size

What you should always keep in mind is that CBD labels will usually tell you how many milligrams of CBD oil there is total in the container. While this is good information, it doesn’t actually tell you the amount of the CBD oil you should take at one time: to better understand that, know that a typical amount in a dropper will make up 1mL, which is usually a single intended portion size.

●       Ingredients

Since the CBD extract or isolate is paired with oil to create the final results, you should make sure you’re not allergic to any of the additional ingredients. For most CBD oils, “one of the main ingredients of the product may be grapeseed oil, MCT oil, olive oil, or even cold-pressed hemp seed oil.”

●       Batch Numbers & the COA

The COA (or Certificate of Analysis) is what will tell you all the important info you need to know about your CBD oil’s lab results. Make sure that any product you use is always third-party lab tested, and that the CBD concentrations always match exactly what’s on the product label.

General Good-to-Knows

Generally, a few other good certifications to look out for before making a purchase are that a product is:

  • USDA-certified
  • Non-GMO
  • Made using GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices)

All Tree of Life Seeds CBD products have the above – and beyond! Our goal: to make your CBD shopping experience as straightforward, honest, and helpful as possible so you don’t have to worry about reading the fine print or hunting down any COAs.
